Péter Esterházy’s villa

The Esterházy Villa, situated along the Római-part, was the home and creative hub of Péter Esterházy, Kossuth Prize-winning author, for more than four decades. Although it is not classified as a listed building from an architectural standpoint, its cultural significance is immeasurable: through the works created here and the history of the Esterházy family, it represents a prominent element of Hungarian intellectual heritage. The property remained vacant for many years, and its condition deteriorated considerably. At the initiative of the Friends of Hungarian Literature Creative House (MIBA) Foundation, Market Építő Zrt., as part of its corporate social responsibility programme, undertook the renovation works necessary for its operation free of charge.
The aim of the project was to preserve the original character of the villa and to create a creative house that would not be a modern luxury residence, but would preserve the atmosphere of the Esterházy era and provide a home for community and literary life. During the preparatory phase, our specialists conducted point cloud surveys and condition assessments to identify the required interventions. The most urgent works involved the roof structure, but a range of additional tasks was also mapped out.
Key technical interventions included
Throughout the execution, Market Építő Zrt. leveraged its own professional expertise and extensive industry network, realising the renovation as part of a collaborative construction effort. Completion is anticipated by September 2025. In this project, technical renewal and cultural heritage preservation go hand in hand. The renovation breathes new life into the building not only physically but also symbolically, safeguarding a space that represents freedom of memory and thought. In the future, Esterházy Villa will open its doors as a literary creative space and community venue, strengthening Hungarian cultural life and demonstrating that construction can foster not only buildings but also community and lasting value.
