The Grand Hotel Esztergom is an impressive, 149-room, four-star superior hotel offering high-quality accommodation in the heart of Esztergom, on Prímás Island, with unparalleled views of the Basilica. The eight-storey building has three levels of underground parking, a ground floor and four upper floors, covering a total floor area of 30,000 square metres. It has 131 elegantly furnished rooms and 18 spacious luxury suites, as well as large conference rooms, numerous session rooms, a terrace restaurant, and a wellness and recreation area for guests.

The execution was made by Market Építő Zrt., which took over the building in September 2019, when it was structurally complete, to design and complete the entire construction of the hotel. The hotel was completed in just under two years, by June 2021, and presented special engineering and architectural challenges. During the project, we installed more than 2,500 square metres of glass façade, constructed approximately 20,000 square metres of plasterboard walls, painted and wallpapered nearly 31,000 square metres, and laid more than 93,000 metres of electrical cables – the latter distance is equivalent to the length of the road between Esztergom and Hatvan.

Due to the hotel’s unique, undulating design, no two rooms are exactly alike, which gives the building a special character. During construction, the reinforced concrete frame, which had been left unfinished for several years, had to be structurally reinforced and brought into compliance with regulatory requirements that had changed since then. The work was carried out by approximately 550 employees, and 15,000 ornamental shrubs and trees were planted during the landscaping process.

Its interior design concept is closely linked to the location: the design drew inspiration from the Esztergom Basilica and the elegance of the city’s 1930s aircraft manufacturing, which is linked to the designs of Ernő Rubik. The modern, clean-cut appearance and functional layout of the building offer guests a new experience. For example, instead of the usual frontal location, the reception has been moved to the side, so that the lobby and bar have become the centre of the space with their open, flowing areas.

In 2022, the Grand Hotel Esztergom won the Business Excellence Award established by Business Traveller Hungary as the best business hotel, which was the result of high quality and excellent workmanship.

Architectural and construction highlights

Due to the unique, undulating shape of the building, no two rooms are alike, so every guest can enjoy a special, unique spatial experience, which is a rare feature in the hotel industry.

One of the most striking features of the lobby is a dome-shaped lighting system with a diameter of approximately four metres, which creates a special play of light to make the space even more atmospheric.

The chessboard-patterned wall-to-wall carpets on the floors of the rooms evoke the Renaissance style of the local Bakócz Chapel, so historical motifs appear in subtle harmony with the modern interior design.

Wall blinds have been installed in the lobby area, which filter the incoming sunlight, increase the verticality of the space and create an exciting, elegant atmosphere that highlights the exclusive nature of the room.

The spacious suites are located on the top, fourth floor and have their own terraces offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Esztergom Basilica and the city.

Guests' comfort is ensured by a modern recreation area, a cosy barbecue terrace and a wellness area inspired by the underwater world, creating a fresh and calming atmosphere.
