One of Hungary’s largest greenfield industrial investments was launched in Iváncsa in the spring of 2021, where Market Építő Zrt. constructed South Korean SK Innovation’s largest European battery factory. The project was unique in that it had to be completed in just 13 months – and it was ultimately delivered on time and in accordance with the client’s expectations.

The entire investment took place on 135 hectares and was divided into three phases. In the first phase, a battery manufacturing plant with an annual capacity of 30 GWh and a 48 MW gas-fired boiler house were built. Our tasks included the preparation of the entire site, large-scale earthworks, pile foundation, structural engineering, road and utility construction, as well as architectural and structural engineering works.

A total of 22 industrial buildings were constructed, with a total floor area of nearly 280,000 m². During construction, we installed more than 85,000 m³ of prefabricated elements, and the heavy-duty, three-storey floor structures of the production halls required special installation scheduling and technical precision. Hungary’s largest mobile concrete mixer supplied the material for the project, capable of serving up to 17 concrete mixers per hour, operating 10 hours a day.

At the peak of construction, more than 900 professionals and 230 power machines were working simultaneously on site. Due to the extremely tight schedule, the various construction phases were carried out in parallel, which required exemplary organisation and logistics. The project was put out to international tender, and we won the contract against Japanese, Austrian and Hungarian competitors.

SK Innovation’s decision to locate its third European factory in Hungary will significantly contribute to strengthening Hungary’s role in electromobility.
