The Hotel Gerardus in Szeged, which was built in 19 months as part of an investment by the Diocese of Szeged-Csanád and has been awarded LEED Silver certification, was constructed by Market Építő Zrt., as the general contractor of the project. The four-star, 50-room hotel was built as part of the Szent Gellért Forum sports and event complex and is a unique example of sustainable, complex design and construction.

As an integral part of the Szent Gellért Forum complex, the hotel supports a wide range of activities including sporting events, cultural programmes, family gatherings, and academic functions. The Forum itself comprises an 8,200-seat stadium, a multifunctional hall, an amphitheatre, sports fields, a playground, and a gym. The hotel’s design complements these facilities, providing comfortable accommodation for guests as well as serving the needs of sports teams and training camps.

The project was delivered under a Design & Build contract, enabling our company to be actively involved in the process from the preparation of the construction design phase onwards. Early operator engagement, coupled with close collaboration among designers, interior architects, and contractors, ensured that every detail of the building reflected the client’s requirements while meeting –  and in many cases exceeding –  the sustainability targets set for the project.

Sustainability goals and solutions

A significant portion of the hotel’s heating demand is met by thermal energy drawn from the Szent Gellért Forum’s geothermal well, substantially reducing both environmental impact and operating costs.

More than 90% of construction waste was recycled, which is exemplary from a circular economy perspective.

The goal at every stage of the project was to meet LEED criteria, including water efficiency, green roof design, thermal insulation, indoor air quality and comfort parameters.

During the certification process, the amount of renewable energy was determined based on actual operational data, ensuring full and verifiable compliance with LEED requirements.
