For many years, the logistical needs of airlines on both arrivals and departures sides at Terminal 2A of Liszt Ferenc International Airport were served by a lightweight industrial hall and its connecting corridor. In early 2019, however, the Pier 1 passenger concourse was handed over in two phases – a facility designed to meet the highest passenger expectations and one of key importance for the country’s international image. Every phase of construction was completed in record time: precisely 339 days.

The complex was built on the airport’s operational apron – a vast expanse of sloping concrete. The resulting structure is a facility that meets twenty-first-century standards and marks a new milestone in the infrastructural and architectural evolution of Hungarian aviation.

The single-storey concourse, with an interior height of 5.2 metres, is characterised by timber beams and expansive glazed surfaces, imparting a distinctive and inviting atmosphere.

Architectural and construction features

The 120-metre-long Pier 1 passenger concourse is organically connected to Terminal 2A.

The new facility can accommodate up to 5,000 passengers at a time.

Pier 1 passenger concourse also has three large-capacity toilet blocks and a smoking terrace.

The waiting areas have a total of 2,500 seats and 580 USB ports.

Flight information is provided by 149 FIDS monitors and a public-address system comprising 145 speakers.

Construction was executed in the record timeframe of just 339 days, ensuring completion ahead of the summer travel season.
